What Sisters are doing...

...Collaboratively with others

It all began with a post card campaign initiated by two orders of Franciscan Sisters in January 2010.  Over the past year QuikTrip, in partnership with Allied Waste, has established a pilot program for recycling in the St. Louis Metro area, through the encouragement of the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and the Franciscan Sisters of Mary.

QuikTrip, which owns and operates 63 locations in the St. Louis area, estimates the company will be able to recycle about 90 percent of all trash from its stores.  The end result?  QuikTrip has set up single-stream recycling in almost all of its area stores and has switched to more environmentally friendly product packaging.

QuikTrip acknowledges and thanks the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and the Franciscan Sisters of Mary for their assistance in establishing this pilot program for recycling. The company hopes that the recycling program will remain successful and that other retailers will have the opportunity to join in this partnership.

Franciscans For Earth are always wanting to promote systemic change.  Recently Maurice, our Director of Eco-Justice, thought of making signs that can be posted outside of our administration building here in Kirkwood.  We have a high volume of both pedestrian and automobile traffic just outside and signage with a changeable eco-message is just one more way of helping to “green” the consciousness of our society.  (Click on to the photo to learn ways to lessen your carbon footprint!)
